Estate Planning: What are burial directives, and why do I need them?

We’ve published several estate planning blog posts over the last month or so. And the common thread is this: having a plan in place for when you are incapacitated or no longer around is essential to protecting your assets and your loved ones. While most people immediately think of documents such as wills and trusts, there are a variety of additional solutions out there to consider. This includes today’s topic: Burial Directives.

Burial Directives – what are they, and why do I need them?

Similar to a power of attorney, burial directives allow you to leave detailed instructions behind for your family. But while POAs generally deal with specific matters such as medical or financial affairs, burial directives are more concerned with determining who you want to be in charge of managing your end-of-life wishes.

Having this document in place is critical to eliminate any confusion among family members.

Just a few tasks your designated representative can perform include:

  • Organizing your memorial and funeral
  • Deciding who can or cannot attend
  • Determining the disposition of your remains (burial or cremation)
  • How funeral costs will be taken care of

The obvious goal with any burial directive is to honor the wishes of the deceased. Typically, this document would be created separately from any preexisting will or trust. It’s always a good idea to have open and honest conversations with your family members. Let them know where your burial directives are located so they can find them easily.
