We hear all the time about the term child abuse, which most people naturally associate with some form of physical harm or threat of serious injury. But child abuse encompasses everything from physical and emotional abuse to sexual misconduct and even neglect.

In today’s article, we will focus on neglect. Furthermore, we will show you that abuse is abuse, no matter what form it takes. Neglect, in particular, can be equally or more harmful.

Neglect — Defined

Neglect is the act of leaving a child in a situation of substantial risk of physical or mental harm. There can be a myriad of scenarios where neglect is obvious, including:
  • Leaving a child alone and having no intention of returning
  • Not providing food, shelter, or seeking medical treatment for injury or sickness
  • Intentionally not removing a child from a harmful situation
  • Placing a child in a situation that requires judgment or actions beyond the child’s level of maturity or physical or mental capabilities — resulting in injury or harm
The ramifications of child neglect are far-reaching and well documented. Here are some sobering national statistics on child abuse and neglect, per the National Children’s Alliance:
  • In 2015, an estimated 1,670 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States
  • In 2015, Children’s Advocacy Centers around the country served more than 311,000 child victims of abuse
  • Neglect is the most common form of maltreatment. Of the children who experienced maltreatment or abuse, three-quarters suffered neglect
