5 Qualities That A Competent Family Lawyer Should Have (Part II)5 Qualities That A Competent Family Lawyer Should Have (Part II) – Whether you have a simple legal question or you are going through a complex child custody, child support, alimony, or asset division case, it is extremely important to have an attorney who is competent to give you sound advice.

A few years ago, we wrote a blog listing out five qualities that a competent lawyer in Texas should have. Among those included excellent communication skills, commitment, and creativity.

Here are five more qualities to add to that list:

CREDIBILITY

Credibility is a quality a family lawyer cultivates through years of experience and is strengthened through their reputation with other lawyers, judges, and clients. A credible lawyer needs to be fair, honest, and only promises what they can deliver. They don’t resort to tricks in the courtroom and are more concerned with presenting fair evidence that serves a client’s best interest.

SOLUTIONS-MINDED

To piggyback off the previous list and a lawyer’s ability to be creative, you want to hire a lawyer who is solutions-minded. A lawyer who uses words like “we” and “us” instead of “you” and “your” in any family law matter means they are working toward a common goal, are bought-in to your case, and are eager to provide solutions.

PERSONABLE

This is another quality about a competent family lawyer which should go without saying. A lawyer needs to be good at making their clients feel comfortable with each interaction. They have a desire to get to know each other, build relationships, and spur results that matter.

HONEST ADVICE GIVER

Often, a lawyer may only have one shot at making a quality impression on a potential client. A lawyer who focuses on speaking from the heart and providing constructive and honest advice – even if that advice isn’t what the client wants to hear – will go a long way in showing whose side the lawyer is truly on and the investment they have in providing real value to each client.

PERSPECTIVE

A lawyer who has a healthy perspective on life, the sanctity of marriage, children, and each spouse’s role in that relationship is more apt to focus on the clients’ needs instead of the mighty dollar. Furthermore, experiences in their past – maybe they are a child of divorce – make them uniquely qualified to sit with individuals and give them practical and sound advice. Their goal is to create positives out of what are otherwise difficult situations.
